Product certification

Confirming that a product implements a standard as specified

1EdTech product certification tests whether a product implements a given standard, and the features that standard defines, as specified. Products that pass carry the 1EdTech Certified logo and are listed in the TrustEd Apps Directory.

Who issues this certification

1EdTech Global runs the testing and issues the certification. 1EdTech Korea neither develops standards nor issues certifications. Applications and enquiries go to 1EdTech Global, and there is no separate intake channel in Korea.

What is tested

1EdTech runs a testing programme for each standard. Testing confirms whether a product implements that standard as specified and supports the features the standard defines. Certification is granted per standard rather than once for a whole product, so a single product needs separate LTI and OneRoster certifications.

For suppliers, certification is the fastest and most reliable route to product integration. Instead of negotiating each connection institution by institution, one demonstrated conformance carries across many environments.

For institutions, it is the basis for an ecosystem where tools and content work together. It keeps you from being tied to one supplier, widens purchasing choice, and lowers total cost of ownership by reducing bespoke integration work.

How certification works

What gets tested differs by standard, but the process does not. 1EdTech Global runs every product certification in four steps, and the sequence below applies whichever standard you apply for.

  1. Assess

You gauge whether your product is ready to certify. Review the developer resources for the standard and build using the code snippets in the 1EdTech GitHub repository. You can read the FAQs or raise a support ticket on the 1EdTech support site, and Contributing members can take one-to-one support calls with 1EdTech staff. Repository access depends on membership level.

  2. Test

You run your product through the 1EdTech certification test suite. Read the directions for the suite first, then put the product through it. There is no limit on how often you test, so you can fix whatever surfaces and run it again.

  3. Submit

You send your test results to 1EdTech for official validation. Staff review the results by hand, so validation takes time. At this step you also provide the product information that appears in the TrustEd Apps Directory.

  4. Receive

You receive a certification registration number along with details on how to use the 1EdTech Certified logo and how to announce the certification. The logo can appear on your website and marketing materials.

Data privacy certification follows a different route

Data privacy certification shares the step names above but not their content. Nothing is tested in code. Your published policies are vetted instead, and the decisive difference is that the second step is partnering rather than testing.

  • Assess — you email appvetting@1edtech.org to request vetting. The 1EdTech data privacy team reviews your published policies against the 1EdTech Data Privacy Rubric.
  • Partner — you work with the 1EdTech data privacy team to address what they raise and to meet the certification requirements.
  • Submit — you complete a self-assessment confirming that your policies meet the criteria in the Data Privacy Rubric.
  • Receive — you receive a certification number and seal, and your product appears in the TrustEd Apps Directory and the Management Suite.

The review covers published policy documents such as your privacy policy, terms of service, advertising policy, and AI policy. It also records whether those policies reference applicable laws such as COPPA, FERPA, and GDPR, and notes accessibility provisions.

Two marks

The TrustEd Apps Directory shows two marks that mean different things. They should be read separately.

  • 1EdTech Certified logo — passed interoperability testing for the standard shown
  • TrustEd Apps Seal — met vetting and certification requirements for the standard shown

Listing in the TrustEd Apps Directory

The TrustEd Apps Directory is the official listing of products that 1EdTech has reviewed, vetted, or certified. Institutions use it to verify a product’s integration features and to inform procurement decisions.

A product that is not listed has either not passed 1EdTech testing or has let its certification lapse. Certification is not permanent once granted, so it is worth checking listing status as well.

Products without certification also appear when vetting data is available. Being listed is therefore not proof of certification on its own, and the logo and seal shown on the product should be read alongside it. If a problem arises with a certified product in the listing, 1EdTech works with the supplier to resolve it.

Self-assessment and review are not the same

The directory shows supplier self-assessments alongside certification results. The two rest on different evidence and should not be read as equivalent.

  • Self-assessment rubrics — accessibility, security practices, generative AI data and similar areas, completed by the supplier
  • Privacy rubric — vetting against an open rubric designed and approved by 1EdTech members

Separately, the Data Privacy and Security Agreement (DPSA) Template is a shared document that member institutions and suppliers use during procurement. It serves a different purpose from certification or self-assessment.

What keeps a certification current

Products must be recertified annually, and active 1EdTech membership is required to maintain certification. If either lapses, the certification does not hold.

Certification is a status you renew each year rather than something you earn once. What institutions check in the TrustEd Apps Directory is the certification currently in force, so it is worth planning membership renewal alongside it.

Applying and costs

Applications go through the 1EdTech Global contact channel. 1EdTech members can get expert support on implementing the standards before completing conformance certification, so checking your membership status first makes preparation easier.

Certification carries a fee, and the terms depend on membership status. Please contact 1EdTech Global for specifics.

In preparing, it helps to decide first which standard and which of its features you are targeting. Because certification is granted per standard, choosing the standards your product actually needs for its integration scenarios, and sequencing them, is what keeps time and cost down.
